ACCESS TO JUSTICE AND LEGAL-AID

The Jordanian Constitution provides for the right to access justice.

However, legal representation is only guaranteed where punishment for the crime is > 10 years or punishable by execution.

COURTS:

While the law on civil rights and civil claims does not allow an individual to appear before the courts without a lawyer, in cases where the claim exceeds 1,000 dinars, in personal status and criminal cases, the law allows individuals to be represented without a lawyer.

Courts may postpone paying legal fees to those unable to pay court fees, but payment must be made by the time a sentence is issued.
